What is a flower frog?
A flower frog is a reusable flower arranging tool that holds stems in place inside a vase or container. Flower frogs allow florists and home arrangers to create beautiful floral designs without using floral foam.
Flower frogs come in many styles, including traditional kenzans, pin holders, and hairpin holders. By securing stems at the base of the arrangement, flower frogs provide structure, stability, and greater creative control while allowing flowers to drink water naturally.
What is a kenzan?
A kenzan is a type of flower frog that uses upright metal pins to hold flower stems in place. Kenzans are commonly used in ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging, but are also popular among modern florists and flower enthusiasts.
The sharp pins anchor stems securely, making it possible to create airy, natural-looking arrangements without floral foam.
Are kenzans and flower frogs the same thing?
A kenzan and a flower frog are closely related flower arranging tools, but they are not exactly the same thing.
A flower frog is the broader category that includes many types of stem-support mechanics.
A kenzan is a specific type of flower frog that uses metal pins to secure stems.
Other flower frogs, such as hairpin holders, use different methods to support flowers.
In other words, all kenzans are flower frogs, but not all flower frogs are kenzans.
Why are flower frogs called flower frogs?
The exact origin of the term "flower frog" is unknown, but flower frogs have been used in floral design for more than a century.
Some believe flower frogs were named because early versions resembled small frogs sitting in water. Others suggest the pins or prongs looked similar to a frog's feet gripping a surface. Another theory is that the word "frog" was historically used to describe objects that held other items in place.
While the true origin may never be known, flower frogs remain one of the most popular tools for sustainable flower arranging.
Are flower frogs better than floral foam?
Many florists consider flower frogs a better alternative to floral foam because flower frogs are reusable, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly.
Unlike floral foam, flower frogs do not create waste with every arrangement and allow flower stems direct access to water. Flower frogs also make it easier to create natural, airy floral designs with fewer stems.
Why people switch:
- Reusable (no waste)
- Better for the environment
- Keeps stems healthier (they can drink water naturally)
- Gives a more natural, airy look
Floral foam is single-use and can block water uptake—frogs don’t.
How do you use a flower frog?
To use a flower frog, place the flower frog in a vase or container, add water, and insert flower stems into or around the holder. The flower frog keeps stems securely positioned while allowing you to build your arrangement one stem at a time.
Many florists prefer flower frogs because they offer more flexibility than floral foam and allow flowers to hydrate naturally.
It’s simpler than it looks:
- Place the frog in a vase with a flat bottom
- Add water
- Press stems onto the pins (or between hairpins)
- Build your arrangement stem by stem
Pro tip: Start with your structural stems first, then fill in around them.
Here are a few links to step-by-step guides on using our kenzan and signature Hairpin Holder.
Are the pins sharp?
Yes—especially on traditional kenzans.
The Floral Genius kezan are made with incredibly sharp pins designed to grip stems securely, so they are sharp to the touch. We recommend handling with care and storing safely.
If you want something gentler, our hairpin holders are a great alternative—they hold stems securely without piercing them.
Will a flower frog damage my stems?
- Kenzans (pin style): pierce stems, but typically do not harm them if used properly
- Hairpin style: holds stems without puncturing—great for delicate or hollow stems
Both options still allow flowers to hydrate properly.
What size flower frog should I get?
It depends on your vase and arrangement style:
- Small (7/8"–1-5/8") → bud vases, tiny arrangements
- Medium (2–2-1/2") → everyday arrangements (most popular)
- Large (3"–3-1/2") → centerpieces
- Extra large (4-1/2"-5-1/2") → statement designs
When in doubt, go medium—it’s the most versatile.
What is the difference between a standard kenzan and a pin cup kenzan?
A standard kenzan and a pin cup kenzan both use metal pins to hold flower stems in place, but a pin cup kenzan adds something extra: a built-in watertight vessel.
A standard kenzan consists of a weighted base with metal pins and is designed to be placed inside a vase, bowl, or other water-holding container. This is the traditional choice for ikebana and many modern floral designs.
A pin cup kenzan combines a kenzan and a vase into a single piece. The watertight cup holds water for your flowers, allowing you to create arrangements in containers that wouldn't normally be suitable for fresh flowers.
Pin cup kenzans are especially useful when designing with:
- Baskets
- Wooden boxes
- Decorative trays
- Vintage containers
- Other vessels that don't hold water on their own
Many designers also use pin cup kenzans as standalone arrangements. Because the cup is both functional and decorative, it can be displayed on its own as a minimalist centerpiece or accent piece.
If you love creating arrangements in unique containers, a pin cup kenzan offers the flexibility of a traditional kenzan with the convenience of a built-in vase.
Do I need a special vase to use flower frogs?
No, but a few things help:
- Flat bottom (for stability)
- Low, wide shape (easier arranging)
- Enough space around the frog
Shallow bowls are ideal, but you can use almost anything with a stable base.
How do you keep a flower frog from moving?
A flower frog can be secured in a vase using waterproof floral putty, museum gel, or by placing the flower frog firmly on a flat vase bottom.
For the most reliable hold, we recommend waterproof floral putty. Floral putty creates a strong bond between the flower frog and the vase, helping keep arrangements stable even when working with larger flowers or heavier stems.
Our flower frogs are weighted for stability, but a small amount of floral putty provides additional security and is a favorite trick among professional florists.
Are Floral Genius frogs made in the USA?
Yes, they are.
We’re proud to be one of the only manufacturers producing high-quality flower frogs in the United States, built to last for years (not seasons).
Each of our flower frogs are handcrafted by a small but mighty team of really incredible humans.
What are Floral Genius flower frogs made of?
Our frogs are made with:
- A solid lead base
- Brass pins
They’re designed to be long-lasting, rust-resistant, and professional-grade.
To learn more about why we use these materials, read this blog.
Do your flower frogs contain lead? Is it safe?
Yes. The bases of our flower frogs are made of lead for weight and rust resistance.
Safety notes:
- Painted versions create a barrier between you and the base
- If using an unpainted base, simply wash your hands after handling
- Do not place in your mouth (we know… but we have to say it)
Used as intended, they are safe and widely used in floral design.
Can beginners use flower frogs?
Yes! Flower frogs are beginner-friendly flower arranging tools that can be used by both new and experienced designers.
Many beginners find our hairpin flower frogs easier to learn than traditional kenzans because stems can be inserted, removed, and repositioned without piercing them. Hairpin holders provide excellent support while making it easy to experiment with different flower arrangements as you learn.
Whether you choose a hairpin holder or a traditional kenzan, flower arranging with a flower frog becomes intuitive with a little practice.
Why won’t my stems stay in place?
A few common fixes:
- Cut stems at an angle for better grip
- Use thicker/woodier stems as your base structure
- Push stems deeper onto pins
- Start with fewer stems and build gradually
It gets easier quickly with practice.
Can I use a flower frog for dried or artificial flowers?
Yes!
- Hairpin style is especially ideal for dried and silk stems
- Provides grip without damaging fragile materials
How do I clean a flower frog?
To clean a flower frog, rinse it with warm water and wash it with a mild dish detergent as needed. A soft brush, such as an old toothbrush, works well for removing debris from between pins or hairpins. For stubborn debris, use the pick end of a flower frog pin straightener to dislodge leftover stems.
Do not place a flower frog in the dishwasher, as high heat and harsh detergents can damage painted finishes.
For deeper cleaning, soak your flower frog in water with a denture cleaner tablet. We have found that flower frogs can safely soak for up to 24 hours in denture cleaner, which helps remove buildup and residue without damaging the paint.
How long do flower frogs last?
Years—often decades.
These are not disposable tools. A well-made frog (like ours!) can last a lifetime with basic care.
Where can I buy flower frogs?
A flower frog can be purchased from specialty floral suppliers, ikebana retailers, craft stores, and online flower arranging shops. However, not all flower frogs are created equal.
At Floral Genius, we specialize in premium flower frogs and kenzans designed to last for years of regular use. Our collection includes traditional pin holders, beginner-friendly hairpin holders, water-tight pin cups, floral putty, and other tools for sustainable flower arranging.
Unlike many imported options, our flower frogs are manufactured in the United States and built with a focus on durability, stability, and performance.
Whether you're creating your first arrangement or designing professionally, we offer flower frogs in a variety of sizes to fit everything from bud vases to large centerpieces.
Why choose a Floral Genius flower frog?
Floral Genius flower frogs are designed for florists and flower lovers who want professional-quality flower arranging tools that last a lifetime.
We are known for our strict quality standards, American manufacturing, and thoughtful design. Our kenzans feature taller pins and a higher pin density than many leading brands, giving you more stem placement options, stronger support, and greater design flexibility.
Because we know a flower frog is an investment, every Floral Genius flower frog is built for durability, performance, and years of use.
Do I need more than one flower frog?
Probably 😏
Most people start with one… and quickly realize:
- Different vase sizes need different frogs
- Different arrangements benefit from different styles
It’s less about “one perfect frog” and more about having the right tool for the job.

How do flower frogs improve floral arrangement stability?
Flower frogs improve floral arrangement stability by securely anchoring each stem at the base of the design. Instead of relying on floral foam or tape, a flower frog allows each stem to be positioned individually, creating a stronger, more balanced arrangement.
Because stems are supported exactly where you place them, flower frogs make it easier to:
- Keep flowers from shifting or falling over
- Create natural, airy designs
- Support heavier blooms and branches
- Make adjustments without rebuilding the entire arrangement
Professional florists and home flower enthusiasts alike appreciate the control and stability that flower frogs provide.
